Making Music

Yes, I'm looking backward again, back to when my oldest son was still a little guy. He must have been about three here. I think my dad actually had hopes that Jim would learn to play the harmonica. He never did, as far as I know, instead he picked up a couple other instruments, piano and guitar. But I'm sure his grandpa was a major influence in Jim's taking up music.

My dad has been making music as far back as I can remember. He plays guitar, banjo, and harmonica, and has also been known to pick up a Jaws (or is it Jews) harp once in a while as well as a banjo/ukulele. He played for us at home when we were kids, he played here and there at church, and now he packs up his instruments and takes them into several nursing homes each week. He gives a simple gospel message and plays old hymns for the residents.

Jim plays his guitar for the junior high kids during Friday night youth meetings at church and the keyboard with the worship team on Sunday mornings. Once in a while he goes to one of the nursing homes with his grandparents. I love seeing my father's love for music passed on to his grandchildren. Now if we could just get someone to take up harmonica!

  1. What a cute picture! I almost forgot Jim was that little once. (not really) It's funny to think I used to carry him around on my hip and pinch his little cheeks. I'm glad he picked up dad's love for making music. Michael misses playing the sax, but I'm not so sure he would be totally happy if he were still playing it.

  3. I think it is great that your son plays two instruments and uses it to glorify God! That is awesome! What a fine young man!
