L is for Lettuce

L is for lettuce, in this case Romaine.

I stopped buying iceberg lettuce when I heard it had absolutely no nutritional value, though I'm not quite sure I believe it. Tonight we had cucumbers, yellow bell peppers, and a few grape tomatoes on our salad, and there were sweet red onions on the table along with Romano cheese.

When I grow lettuce for salads, I plant red and green leaf lettuce and spinach. It goes directly from the garden into my salad, unless, of course, I make my garden under the wires where the birds like to perch... Blech! In that case I forgo the homegrown stuff and decide to find a different place to acquire my lettuce.

Pass the Cracked Pepper Ranch, please. Croutons? No thank you. Not this time. How about you?

  2. We switched out iceberg, too! We like romaine or that mesclun mix. Yum.

  5. I don't think I've bought iceberg lettuce since Dave and I got married. We like the healthier lettuces. Your salad looks delicious! Sure, I'll have a few croutons please! :9

  6. I don't mind iceberg lettuce in sandwiches just for a bit of colour and crunch. But there is nothing like a good old-fashioned caesar salad made with the right kind of lettuce - WITH the croutons, thank you very much. LOL

  7. Romaine is my favorite lettuce. It like how its crisp. I can't believe that there's no nutritional value in iceberg either. If anything there is water and that counts. Maybe why iceberg salad tastes so refeshing on a hot day.

  10. Anybody know why iceberg became the lettuce of our childhoods in the US? Like everyone else I knew no other lettuce for too many years. And Martha, there is nothing better than a salad straight out of the garden!
    Thanks for a great L-contribution,

  11. The salad looks luscious. I too do not use icebeg anymore once I heard it had little nutritional content. I usually use romaine or baby green spring mixes.
