The Perfect Day

If there is such a thing as the "perfect winter day", this was it. It was cold, but absolutely gorgeous. The trees looked like glass when the sun hit the just right; glass forests, just like in Narnia. I tried to capture it in a photo but I'm afraid it falls far short.

I decided a day like this could not be wasted. Although I felt like taking a nap, I called my sister, Rachel, instead and we met to take the kids sledding.
I'm getting more and more nervous about sledding as my children grow older. They are no longer content to slide down one fairly safe-looking hill, instead they are on the watch for jumps and very steep hills. Trees are no object and nothing seems to scare them. (I'm quite certain once one of them takes a good bounce on his tailbone this will change...) I watched them crash through branches, fly through the air, plunge down embankments, and slosh through mud puddles. Apparently there is no deterrent. I am pleased to report that all of us left the slopes on our own power, although Ben did have a slight headache and Nathan has a rather nice looking scratch on his back.

  1. It was a fun day, and I agree, those kids don't stop at anything. It hurt my back just watching them take those jumps.

  2. I know I'm a big chicken when it comes to sledding. not too interested in whooshing down a slope with no control of speed or direction...

  3. That is so true that they just get braver and braver as they get older. I bet it was a fun day, though, especially since there were no serious injuries in the end. The first picture certainly does look like a "perfect winter day".

  5. Our trees look just like that, today, too.
I think it's great that you took the kids sledding. We haven't been once. Shame on me.

  6. I haven't been sledding since I was a kid. We used to sled down a big hill then dad would pull our sleds back up to the top with the snowmobile. We got rides both ways.
