U is for Ugly

U is for ugly.

Baby robins are just plain ugly. Maybe in a few more days and with a few more feathers they will be cute, but for now they just aren't. Funny thing is I checked this nest just a few weeks ago and it was completely empty, not even an egg, and now there are three babies. It sheltered a family last year and I was curious if it would be used again this summer. I thought it had been abandoned.

Mama and Papa must have been working on the house about the time I checked. It's apparent they did at least a little remodeling and cleaned up a bit. I think they did a nice job. It's all tidied up.

  1. I wish we could have birds build a nest that I could watch. Guess I will have to be sastified with just watching the ones that come to my feeder.

BTW When I was working in Property Management, my bosses license plate said AKA UGLY. He was not Tom Selleck, but I didn't consider him ulgy... He had a great sense of humor and loved being called Ugly!.

  2. these babies are pretty ugly - with their huge gaping mouths! I do like the way their parents do their housekeeping, though. it is nice that they are nest proud

  3. They are ugly-- but cute at the same time. We once had doves in our flower pot.

  6. I was going to say the same thing that Leslie said. A mother's love doesn't see ugly.

  8. Ugly, for sure but I'm always amazed at how strong they are 'wired.' My friends and I have likened our teenagers of old to baby birds: big mouths, few feathers and always hungry.

  9. Great shots. They are so ugly they are beautiful. Sometimes its a fine line between beauty and its opposite.

  11. I am a retired avian rehabilitator... I see baby birds as beautiful....perhaps because I was a foster mother??

  12. I'm torn between thinking they are ugly and cute! I guess they are so ugly they are cute. Sort of like some people I know! Nice to know they grow up and become very handsome/pretty robins.

  13. What a great picture, Martha. Ugly they may be, but those baby robins are little sweethearts, too.

  14. Wow, we have an abandoned nest here, maybe it will get used yet. Thanks for posting this! Now we'll leave it alone in case some robins need it.

  15. Yep, looks like they added a layer of insulation and higher walls! :)
One of my most favorite things in the whole world...a nest and hatching babies...ugly and all! :)

  16. Almost had a great picture of one of the parents standing on the nest with babies poking heads up, but they couldn't wait for the camera. :(

  17. They may be ugly, but it is like the ugly duckling story. Soon they they will be beautiful. It is so nice to be able to watch these fledglings grow up and leave the nest.
