The Winter is Past

For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over [and] gone; The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing [of birds] is come, and the voice of the turtle (dove) is heard in our land;
Solomon's Song of Songs 2:11-12

Although the rain is not yet over and gone, I am hopeful that the winter is past. I have heard the singing of birds more often and have even seen a robin hopping about in my yard. The ducks and geese are again considering the backyard as a possible home and voice their opinion as to my presence when I go out to look at them. These Canada geese have not been tamed and taught to eat bread from our hands like those down at Irondequoit Bay, instead they are fearful and fly off when I appear. That is okay with me, I really do not want them setting up permanent residence in my yard. I much prefer to visit them at the lake. I do, however, enjoy their honking as they fly overhead. They are another sure sign of spring.

  1. Yes, I don't see the Canadian Geese here in Tx anymore. I'm so ready for spring. The bird sounds are lovely to hear again, but I must say I pay for the season with my allergies.

  2. Yes, my allergies will be appearing along with the leaves and flowers too, but the warmth of the sun (and some Claritin) is still sounding very nice.

  3. As I read/write this we are in the midist of a hail storm, we have about 1/4 in. so far, and it has spit snow all morning. The temp is mid 40s. Darn hail bruses the pansy blossoms.:(
    Will you tell me how a turtle voice sounds? I have never heard a turtle, never herd on either.:)

  4. Good question, Judi. Maybe I need to update the translation? Most say "turtle dove".

  8. I haven't seen many signs of spring yet, even though it was fairly warm over the weekend. That damp chill is back in the air today. Spring can't be that far away. (I hope you spot those dalmations again and can get their picture!)

    I should show up as Fairport, NY.
    I just thought it was funny when I happened to check a blog and the first thing there was NT...

  10. Key word is "should". If it keeps showing up on the top of the list, it just might be you. :)
