No Church Today

The little church here in town canceled services for today. No Sunday school, no morning meeting, no evening service. Blowing snow and a -25 degree F wind chills aren't kind to those brave enough to venture outside.

I've not done any serious grocery shopping lately, so this morning I took inventory of my food stash. Ben said he was coming over this afternoon and I wondered what kind of victuals I might fix. I found a can of sweetened condensed milk, and another of cherry pie filling, to go with a package of cream cheese waiting in the fridge. A box of crunchy granola bars from Target got crunched up and made into pie crust. (They tasted like crunched up graham cracker bars to start with.) Chicken soup, loaded up with carrots, celery, and onions, is simmering on the back burner. When the time is right I'll add some frozen spinach and a box of leftover rice form our Chinese take-out the other day. Maybe I'll even bake up a batch of biscuits to eat with butter and some of that honey my darling got from his bee keeper friend. And maybe a batch of those way too yummy molasses cookies like mom used to make.

Orville the Trick Fish swam his last stroke and was transported to the Pond Beyond on Friday night. I wonder if he might be doing back floats in Fish Heaven? No more searching the fish bowl and making determinations as to whether or not he's still alive. Yesterday morning I sent him off on the Porcelain Express, soaked the bowl with bleach, and filled it up with water for those crazy cats of mine. And you know, a fish bowl without a fish is just... well.. a bowl full of rocks, so I added a fish just in case anyone should ask what it's still doing on the shelf.

The cats are happy lazing about the house these days. In another month (or so) the snow and cold temperatures will have moved on and spring will be on its way.

  1. Our weather like that was yesterday- absolutely frigid with wind, but I picked up a friend for the Vigil Mass. I wasn't planning to go out today, but granddaughter invited me to run errands with her and her two little ones. It's only 8 degrees, but no wind and plenty of sunshine today. What a difference that makes.
My two kitties have been doing lots of snuggling together since winter started.

    1. It's been a cold and blustery day, Nonnie. I remember days like this when I was a young girl. I would have ventured out then, but today, aside from filling the bird feeder and setting some peanuts out for Little Red (my squirrel friend), I stayed in. It turned out to be a nice day in spite of the weather.
      (Thanks for stopping by.)

  2. I looked to see if our church services might be cancelled but they were not! So we went. I actually got an 'ice cream headache' walking across the parking lot! brr.

Dinner sounds delish...sometimes the best meals come from piecing together what you have.

Poor trick fish. He was talented! ha.

    1. Rare is the day that church is canceled. Calvary Chapel still had services but we didn't attempt the trip today. I'm hoping the weather is better when it's time for Ladies' Prayer on Tuesday.

Dinner was delish and there is more room in both my cabinets and my fridge.

      Orville was unique.

  3. I miss Orville and I didn't even know him personally. He brought us some interesting moments with his "tricks".
You dinner sounds just wonderful. And the pictures of James on the fb looked so cozy. Yumm...I love when with a little imagination a dinner can jump out of the cupboards. Love and Hugs.

    1. It's been down around 0 degrees F (-17 C) with wind chills at -25 degrees F (-31 C) with snow besides. Very cold with poor visibility and bad road conditions. Hibernating sounds like a good idea.
Great news, eh? Celebrating is always fun.

  5. What did you finally make?
I kinda did the same here...
    Omelettes...fried potatoes...peameal bacon...
    Opened with a Greek salad...
    Turned out quite delicious!
    Feet by the wood stove?
    Cheers!
