Yesterday afternoon I was ready to cancel our Graham Cracker House Day. I was tired and frustrated to the point of tears, and really didn't feel much like providing a fun filled few hours for children who are so often naughty and disrespectful. However, we had already made arrangements and I didn't want to back out either. I opted to put on a "happy" face, pop a Christmas CD in the player, and mix up a batch of royal icing.
The children arrived smiling and rambunctious as usual. The mommies brought candy for decorating the houses. I provided the crackers and a place to gather. Grandpa came in looking for lunch, decided to put in an order for pizza, and turned it into an actual party. The cousins were glad to see each other, bounced off walls and furniture, and took full advantage of the empty space left by the toy shelf in a wrestling match. (Go figure...)
It turned out to be an alright day. I'd really wanted to both frost cookies and do our annual graham cracker houses for Christmas this year and now both activities are complete. The children will store up the memories as good and that is really the objective, making good Christmas memories. Maybe one day they'll actually appreciate the effort we put into making them smile.
Wishing You a Happy Thanksgiving.

I guess they don't care if Santa has a list and is checking it twice? ha.
ReplyDeletelaughed at the new wrestling ring.
Apparently they don't believe he checks it at all. Perhaps there is a distinct advantage to having "Santa believing" children...
DeleteOh.....they will Martha.....
ReplyDeleteCancel the Graham Cracker House Day?

DeleteDarling we all feel the pressure! Always have to be the positive one.... always have to be "happy"... always have to be perfect. Don't let it get to you. I'm sure you're doing a magnificent job as grandmom. Never met a kid yet that didn't have happy memories of their grandmom.
ReplyDeleteHa ha! I suppose you are right. And then again, there is that song where Grandma gets run over by a reindeer. I could never decide if the singer was secretly satisfied with Grandma's fate or if he felt bad.
