The Barn Collective

Frigid temperatures discourage orchard walks. No leisurely stroll through the apple trees today, but things were different last Sunday when Cabinet Maker and I decided to take a walk between morning church and the Superbowl. We walked across the street and back through the trees, skipping over mud puddles and following the road that skirts a ramshackle barn where the farmer stores his apple crates. We met a shy dog along the way and on the way back stopped to talk to the farmer's wife who was out counting trees.

Couldn't resist posting the forklift parked in front of the stack of apple crates. Life in the orchard is interesting.

Come join Tom in The Barn Collective.

  1. Do you ever wonder where all those Wayne County apples go, I do. Here hoping that the crazy weather this winter doesn't hurt the crop. Thanks for sharing a bit of home this week. Since you live in "barn heaven" along with me you should have a bunch more to share. Thanks Martha.

    1. I have a rather nice collection of barn photos and am always looking for more. The weather definitely is a little crazy. We're still hovering near 0 degrees and hoping for relief tomorrow. Yes, I do wonder where all the Wayne county apples go. Applesauce, maybe.

    1. It looks like a lot of crates, but come fall there will be a whole lot more. (Don't tell anyone, but they make great jungle gyms.)

  3. That is an awful lot of bins...if they do like we did, there is one backing inside the two...

    1. I'll have to take a closer look and see just how they're stacked next time. I just love when they're full of apples. So pretty.

  4. Growing apples sounds like fun, but I imagine there is a lot of work to it, too!

    1. Growing apples is a ton of work. I never knew how much work went into an orchard until we moved out of town and into real apple country. (The orchards don't belong to us, but we have the pleasure of enjoying them.)

    1. We are surrounded by apple orchards, but they don't belong to us. Once upon a time this was an apple farm but the orchards belonging to this house were sold off long before we moved here. I do love the hum of activity throughout the summer and into the fall.

  6. I cannot imagine operating an apple farm. The owners and the worker bees certainly have their work cut out for them. These are the nicest little photos. Lots of crates stored there in that barn. Glad you followed the bumpy road and brought us the pictures.
