Well, Now

Monday, my day off. Last week I vegetated. Today I cleaned.

Mom's been a little more confused than usual today. Not sure if it's her cold or something else. She's been saying things that either don't quite make sense or asking about going home and then saying, "Do I live here now?" At supper she asked if someone was going to take her home tonight. "No," I said, "You're staying here tonight." Although she's still coughing here and there, it doesn't really seem to be any worse than any other day. I'm continually left guessing what to do, and she's continually left not knowing how to answer my questions.

It's an old photograph, Mother's Day 2006. There's the mom I miss. (I miss that hair I had too. Just can't get it to behave anymore.)

  1. Visiting with you from Wanda's. I cared for my mom the last 10 years of her life. I will keep you both in my prayers.

    1. Yesterday seemed a more confused than usual day. But she did say some funny things too.

  5. Nice photo!

"These are not the droids you're looking for, move along now...". This is how we remind ourselves in our home that it's up to us to set the tone for our elder that it's ok. We have been caring for her for over two years.

    Some recent question/answers:
"I need to find my key to my house" (or car keys)
"Are you taking me home tonite?"
"May I use your phone, I have to call my house to see if anyone's there..".
"I have to call (deceased husband's name) to come pick me up."

but the worst for the caregiver:
"I have to call (family member who is sitting right there) to see if they can come pick me up."

"I have to call my family to come get me from this mixed up place." after what had seemed like a pretty good day.

Find humor when you can, reassure her that she is ok, try to get a break when possible.
    Love, O

    1. Yes, "Every path has its puddles."

Making the adjustment to her way of thinking is confounding at times, but there are the amusing moments, times when although it's sad, there is an element of humor there too.

I wish I'd had a tape recorder running last night.
