The Love of God Frederick M. Lehman 1917
The love of God is greater far than tongue or pen can ever tell;
It goes beyond the highest star, and reaches to the lowest hell;
The guilty pair, bowed down with care, God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled, and pardoned from his sin.
O love of God, how rich and pure!How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure The saints’ and angels’ song.
The love of God is greater far than tongue or pen can ever tell;
It goes beyond the highest star, and reaches to the lowest hell;
The guilty pair, bowed down with care, God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled, and pardoned from his sin.
O love of God, how rich and pure!How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure The saints’ and angels’ song.
When years of time shall pass away, and earthly thrones and kingdoms fall,
When men, who here refuse to pray, on rocks and hills and mountains call,
God’s love so sure, shall still endure, all measureless and strong;
Redeeming grace to Adam’s race— the saints’ and angels’ song.
Could we with ink the ocean fill, and were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill, and every man a scribe by trade,
To write the love of God above, would drain the ocean dry.
Nor could the scroll contain the whole, though stretched from sky to sky.
One of the best songs ever written. How I love it..my friend and I use to sing it as a duet at church.
ReplyDeleteLove the picture...is it large or small. Would love to know the history of that piece.
Timeless words.
ReplyDeleteGood One!!
ReplyDeleteThe piece goes back to 1981 and my high school ceramics class. The assignment was to make a slab box and fill it with things that told something about yourself. The box itself is about 5 inches high and 10 inches long. It was a simple enough assignment, but my life at that time was rather complicated, thus the two figures on top representing myself and my husband. The ceramic box has a hole in the bottom and holds a small music box which is wound with a key. I wanted to put "Music Box Dancer" inside but the craft store didn't have it and my dad brough home "The Skater's Walz" instead. I always loved skating so the music is appropriate even if it wasn't what I had on mind at the time, maybe even more so.
ReplyDeleteSo anyway, we have been singing "The Love of God" at church lately. I don't recall this particular hymn being one of my childhood, although I grew up going to church every week. The song touches my heart and always reminds me of the two figures I put on top of my music box. What a mighty God we serve!
ReplyDeleteI don't know this hymn, but I love the words.
ReplyDeleteI like the last verse the best... it might be my favorite part of any song I've ever heard.
