D is for Decaffeinated

D is for Decaffeinated.

For many months I have been drinking coffee that is half decaffeinated, which basically means it isn't decaffeinated at all. It only means that rather than drink one cup, I drink two instead. (Well, two in the morning and two in the afternoon...) This habit is proving detrimental., especially since my water consumption has decreased while my coffee intake has surged.

I'm making a not-altogether-valiant-attempt to curb my coffee consumption. It doesn't help that a headache typically accompanies the effort and the snowstorm brewing outside only makes the desire for warm drinks all but irresistible. I had a friend once who enjoyed a rather bland cup of hot water. He even preferred it to tea or coffee. I tried it once but found myself less than impressed.

What kind of hot drinks do you like? Is there anything wonderfully simple to make that doesn't include chocolate (it sits funny in my tummy) or caffeine? Maybe something vanilla?

  1. There are all kinds of wonderful herbal teas. Have you tried any of those? They count as water too :-)

  2. forgot to say I need my shot of caffeine in the morning, and my sweetie makes us a latte in the afternoon, but I sip on herbal tea through the day - much better than water and you can drink it cold if you make a pot of it :-)

    1. I do have a variety of teas in the cupboard. Some are caffeinated, some are not. If tea, herbal tea, counts as water, then I should keep a supple on hand. I like orange zinger. :0)

    1. I have a pot of Chai tea brewing in the kitchen.
And my dear daughter in law (and son) gave us some very nice drink mixes at Christmas. One is called Horchata and it tastes good cold or hot. I should find that recipe.

  4. My problem I like strong coffee with lots of creamer, not too much of a fan of hot tea. Chai Tea can be good though.

    1. I used to drink tea exclusively. Guess I've been making up for those years.

  5. Have you tried hot water with lemon? It gives a nice flavour and warms you up without caffeine or calories.

  6. I did get used to hot lemon water when I was doing the Fat Flush. But I must say, with all the tea "stuff" I have, two hutches full....my desired drink is COFFEE. I know I drink too much too. 2 cups morning....a cup mid afternoon...and a cup decaf evening. Sometimes herbal tea.

  7. I drank 2 cups of hot tea so far today. I love it on these cold days. When I drink coffee I drink a very watered down version using the International coffees (I only use 1 rounded teaspoon of mix to a full mug of water), and I only drink 1 a day...but didn't have any today. How about a cup of hot broth to warm you up?

    1. I hate to say it, but that really isn't coffee :-)

    2. I went to a severely watered down version when I started getting "hurties" from caffeine near my monthly cycle. I rarely have a problem now and believe it or not I've adjusted to the watered down version of coffee. Tonight I'm drinking hot chicken broth from my coffee cup...this darned cold! :P

    1. We can still have one when you visit. Coffee might be best savored with a friend (or sister.)

  9. Hot drink....no chocolate...no caffeine....hmmmmmmmmm
I do believe that tea is the only answer here, Martha♥️
    I love Celestial seasonings.....Apple cinnamon....try that!
    Cheers!

  10. Tea. Celestial Seasonings, for sure. There is one for whatever ails you. Tension Tamer, Sleepytime, Lemon Zinger, Orange Zinger, Raspberry Zinger (also these are good as iced teas). Peppermint, Mandarin orange spice, Green teas. There are honey vanilla flavors too.

Also, in bulk tea /health food store section, "Chocolate Chai" (no chocolate in it though, nor does it taste like chocloate) is a very good chai.

And "English" teas, Twinings Earl Grey, Lady Grey, etc. If you boil actual hot water and pour it into a tea pot, you will find the tea exactly the right temperature to drink. Brew 4-6 minutes for most. Add a tsp of honey or drink plain.

When I was a little girl, my grandmother let me make "tea" for my tea set out of plain water and sugar. She also told me that only old maids take both sugar and cream in tea. I have only ever had about 3 cups of coffee in my life.

    Enjoy!!

    1. Ondra, you made me smile this morning. You will be pleased to know that it is noon and I have consumed a pot of green tea and am brewing a new pot of Chai. I did add a touch of sugar to the green but the Chai I'll drink without any sweetener.

I do like my coffee, but will be making an attempt to drink cleaner fluids. I think I'll feel much better in the long run.

Oh, yes! Mandarin orange. That's another favorite. I'm going to be looking for some of that next time I'm at Wegmans.
